Designer Douglas Bowman's reasons for leaving Google remind us that there's a reason we call design an art and not a science. Data and user feedback are always important ingredients of good design, but they are never the sole ingredients of great design.

I always share my perspective of artist vs. designer with my learners... "An artist does what s/he wants; sharing emotions, feelings and views they create from their heads and hearts. There is an emotional attachment to the work. A designer has to get inside a clients' head and design what is in the clients' hearts. Designers must separate emotion from work."
